Geocache Description:

The cache is at the Bundooma Siding on the Old Ghan railway line which is accessed off the 4WD track from Alice to Finke.

The former Central Australia Railway, which was built between 1878 and 1929 and dismantled in 1980, was a 1241 km (771 mi) 1067 mm narrow gauge railway between Port Augusta and Alice Springs.

Extending the line from Oodnadatta to Alice Springs commenced around 1926 and was completed on 6 August 1929.

The tortuously curving narrow-gauge line between Marree and Alice Springs was notoriously prone to delays, often caused by flash floods washing away bridges and tracks. Some track was laid on sand without ballast, and wood sleepers were used, serving as food for termites, causing unstable tracks.

The choice of route through the most arid regions of Australia was influenced above all by the need for water for steam locomotives.

The water came from local bores or creeks and was stored in large elevated tanks. Access to the top and into the tank was by ladder. Today we have AS1657 Standard - Fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders - Design, construction and installation to help look after our safety. Needless to say the existing ladder is far from compliant and seekers will need to assess their own safe elevation. it has been suggested an EWP (Elevated Work Platform) could be used but good luck getting it there on the roads.
