Ce circuit a pour but de faire découvrir certains anciens lavoirs des communes de Chimay et Momignies.
Le but est multiple : premièrement, découvrir de nouveaux sites originaux et historiques tout en s’amusant à la recherche de géocaches. Deuxièmement, se rappeler comment nous faisions sans la technologie actuelle, afin de mieux apprécier ces sites ou de se questionner.
La légende des Sept Sauts
Ce lavoir de la Basse Ville date de 1622. Il est situé près de la fontaine de Sainte-Prisce. Ces deux sites sont tous deux liés à la légende des sept sauts (ou des sept sots) qui donna naissance à la danse du même nom.
Dans son livre "Traditions de Wallonie", Jean Lefèvre écrit : "Dans la région de Chimay et Couvin, une danse particulière, la danse à sept."
En 1622, lorsque Chimay fut assiégé par les troupes d'Ernest Mansfeld, allié des Pays-Bas protestants, les habitants de Chimay se résignèrent à la cruauté de l'envahisseur. Cependant, les femmes de la ville, déterminées à défendre leur foyer, barricadèrent les ponts et les portes, rendant l'accès difficile. Des soldats ennemis découvrirent une sortie d'égout menant à une fontaine utilisée par les lavandières. En tentant d'entrer par cette voie, les soldats furent successivement assommés par les femmes qui les attendaient.
Chaque heure, le carillon de la Collégiale joue l'air de "la danse des 7 sauts". Véritable piano à cloches avec un petit clavier, il a la particularité de ne pas avoir de mi bémol. Il totalise 26 cloches dont la plus ancienne date du 17ème siècle.
À la date de mise de ce cache, en juillet 2024, le carillon ne joue plus cette mélodie en raison d’un problème technique.

This tour introduces you to a couple of old washhouses in the counties of Chimay and Momignies.
Why washhouses? Those sites have always been of interest since I was a child. They remind us of how we used to do without modern technology.
La légende des Sept Sauts
This washhouse in downtown Chimay was built around 1622. It is located near the Sainte-Prisce fountain (which now looks like an old prison or something).
In his book "Traditions of Wallonia," Jean Lefèvre writes: "In the region of Chimay and Couvin, there is a particular la danse des Sept Sauts." In English, you would say the "7 jumps" or the "7 crazies".
In 1622, when Chimay was besieged by the troops of Ernest Mansfeld, an ally of the Protestant Netherlands, the inhabitants of Chimay resigned themselves to the cruelty of the invader. However, the women of the town, determined to defend their homes, barricaded the bridges and gates, making access difficult. Enemy soldiers discovered a sewer outlet leading to a fountain used by the washerwomen. While attempting to enter through the water tunnel, the soldiers were knocked out by the women waiting for them.
Every hour, the carillon of the Collegiate Church plays the tune of "la danse à sept". A true bell piano with a small keyboard, it has the peculiarity of not having an E flat. It has a total of 26 bells, the oldest of which dates back to the 17th century.
As of the placement of this cache in July 2024, the carillon no longer plays this melody due to a technical issue.
