Welcome to the City of Maumee Towpath Trail. This is a gravel trail that connects Maumee to Sidecut Metropark. This trail was once the path that mules would take to pull boats up and down a canal. Looking to the north of the trail, you can look down to see where the canal ran. Hours are Daylight Only.
The Maumee Riverwalk paved trail (which is down the hill to the south from the towpath trail) offers a scenic view of the Maumee River. This Towpath trail offers a wooded walk that parallels the Riverwalk and also leads to Sidecut Metropark. There are several connecting trails that join the two trails
I have a series of geocaches along the Riverwalk to the east of Conant Street. That section of the Riverwalk was the same towpath for the canal. However, the Riverwalk west of Conant Street is just above the normal river water level and floods often. So, trying to continue my geocache series on the Riverwalk would be difficult. So I am taking the higher road/path for the remaining geocaches.
Note that many years ago, there once was a bridge that crossed the river at this point. Since publishing this cache I have done some research about this bridge. I will update this listing soon with more history about this bridge. The supports that are currently visible are from the 1905 Toledo, Bowling Green and Southern Interurban Bridge. I will post pictures an more detail soon. There was a previous bridge located here from 1884, but that was removed before the 1905 bridge was built. The supports for this 1905 bridge still stand in the river. From here, you can see more of the supports that are hidden from the river that helped support the bridge over the mentioned canal.
Note: A more extensive history of the bridges across the Maumee river near and at this location can be read from the book "Bridges at the Foot of the Rapids" by Gary L Franks. It is available from the Toledo Lucas County Public Library system.
