The village of Crosthwaite is located just outside Kendal and has lovely views all around.
Crosthwaite is a village close to the Lyth Valley, which is famous locally for growing damson plums.
The name Crosthwaite comes from an old preaching cross which is no longer here. There are lots of Thwaites in the Lake District. 'Thwaite' comes from the old Norse word 'thveit' or 'thveiti', which means a paddock or a piece of reclaimed, cultivated land. The Vikings that settled here also gave the Lyth Valley its name, "hlith" meaning sloping hillside.
The original cross was probably placed by Monks in the 7th Century. Today's cross was erected to commemorate the Millennium. It is made from a single piece of limestone from Whitbarrow Scar.
Crosthwaite is a farming community, with a school, village hall, church and 17th Century pub (historically a coaching inn). Locals proudly display their home grown fruit, vegetables, art and craft in the village hall each year at Crosthwaite Show. The church dates back to 1878 and you can still see lots of colourful stained glass windows.
