The notion of chilling spirits first came from the Scots who used to cool their whisky by placing rocks from the stream in their glass, hence the term "on the rocks". As refrigeration became common, ice took over the job of cooling drinks from messy rocks. Now you can purchase "whiskey rocks" which are basically pebbles that you are meant to be placed in the freezer several hours before imbibing. They have the advantage of cooling your drink without diluting the spirit. I'm more of a "neat" Scotch imbiber, but to each their own.
