The road that runs next to the park, Hippoksentie, separates Kupittaa park from the Vasaramäki area. Kupittaa has become a central place for both indoor and outdoor sports activities in Turku, as well as a popular place to stroll around or have pick-nick.
Vasaramäki is one of the most beautiful areas in Turku and is close to the city centre. It contains many beautiful houses and gardens, parks, and a remarkable cemetary. The neighbourhood is named after businessman C.G. Hammar (Vasaramäki reads "Hammarbacka" in Swedish), who owned land in the area between 1823-1826.
There has been a building in the late 1800s in the area in which you now stand: "Maison grise" or "Harmaalinna". The cellar that can still be spotted was used as a shelter during the two world wars. (Source: Vasaramäen omakotiyhdistys ry.)
