In 1857, with the assistance of Balthasar Lich, German master miller and millwright Christian Dietert constructed a mill and dam near this site. This grist and saw mill and the subsidiary businesses attached such as Charles Schreiner's general store and bank and Lich's freighting operations formed the mercantile backbone of the new town Remains of the foundations can be spotted below the nearby observation deck while you enjoy a beautiful view of the Guadalupe River, Louise Hays park, and the surrounding countryside.
To locate this cache: Read the historical marker at the posted coordinates. In the lower-left corner of the marker is a note with the name of the person or organization that sponsored the marker.
