Copenhagen's oldest cinema

Palads Teatret is the capital's oldest cinema and an iconic building in the city. I have many memories of this magical building from both childhood and youth. In recent years, there has been talk of demolishing Palads to make room for a high-rise building. Personally, I hope that never happens.

The history

Palads Teatret began its days in 1912 in the old main building of Copenhagen Central Station, when it moved to its current location. In 1916, however, the building had to go to make way for the expansion of the railway area. This led cinema director Sophus Madsen to buy the current site on Axeltorv and hire the architects Andreas Clemmensen and Johan Nielsen, who designed the current building in neo-baroque style. The cinema was commissioned on 25 January 1918.

The building was organized around a vestibule with a magnificent staircase in the Italian Renaissance style. The stairwell was the centerpiece of a building, with the theater occupying the eastern end and a restaurant the western part.

Palads was incorporated into Nordisk Film in 1929.

Palads Teatret had been open continuously, with a few exceptions during the Second World War and a rebuild in the summer of 1955, until 1978. In the 1970s, however, cinemas in Copenhagen experienced a decline, and with only four daily performances and an occupancy rate of 15, a change was necessary . Inspired by the Concorde Marignian cinema in Paris, it was decided to replace the large hall with several smaller halls. The renovation began on 4 June 1978, and already on 24 June the first six halls (7-12) were opened. The original cinema hall, which had 1,519 seats, was divided into six smaller halls – three on the balcony and three on the floor – of which the largest (hall 1) had 821 seats. On 1 September, the entire cinema was fully renovated with twelve screens ready to show films. Despite skepticism, the renovation proved to be a great success, and it was decided to expand with five more halls in the basement, which were completed on 1 September the following year.

In 1989, the entire building was painted by Poul Gernes, giving it the look it has today. At the same time, the lower course of the interior grand staircase was demolished in favor of counters for ticket sales.

Today, Palads Teatret has 17 halls of all sizes, from a series of very small ones with only about 50 seats to hall 1 with room for 547 people.
