Barneyville experienced a rapid increase in population in the early 1900s because of its reputation for quality moonshine. The growth continued until 1920 when the Prohibition Era began. After 1920 the area became popular with dirt bike riders because of the abundance of sandy trails. In the late 1930s tension mounted between the dirt bike riders and the townfolk. The dirt bike riders eventually drove away the townfolk and by 1940 Barneyville was no more.
