Geocache Description:

War Memorial #214 ~ Bassingbourn

Bassingbourn war memorial stands in the High Street in the centre of Bassingbourn village in a walled area and is a monument to the dead from both Bassingbourn and Kneesworth. The memorial takes the form of a three stepped square base surmounted by a double plinth with a tapered shaft and Celtic cross. The inscription is to be found on the sides of the upper plinth with a laurel wreath on the front face. The whole memorial stands in the centre of an enclosure formed by four low red brick walls. Those who fell in World War One are detailed on one side for Bassignbourn and the other for Kneesworth, a third side details those from both habitations for World War Two. There are 42 names for World War 1 and 11 for World War 2. The memorial was first unveiled on 22nd May 1921 and dedicated by Rev. R H Boyd. The monies to build the memorial were raised by public donation, the achitect was Mr Arthur G Walker and the builders Messrs Gimson & Co. Details appeared in the Royston Crow on 27th May 1921.
