Geocache Description:

A Brief Overview of Cherhill's History

  • Early History: Evidence suggests that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
  • Roman Period: Roman settlements have been discovered in the vicinity, indicating a significant presence during this era.
  • Medieval Times: Cherhill became part of the large estate of Calne and later passed through the hands of influential families like the Beauchamps. The village's church, dedicated to St. James, is an ancient building with a rich history.
  • Later Periods: The 18th century saw the creation of the iconic Cherhill White Horse, a striking landmark visible for miles around. The Lansdowne Monument, another prominent feature, was erected to commemorate the birth of the Prince of Wales.

ABOUT THE CACHE

This is a roadside cache, with a small walk way. There is also a layby to park in. As it is on the side of a main road, I don't recommend this cache for young children.
