Eastham is known as "Gateway to the Cape Cod National Seashore".
It was settled in 1644 and incorporated 1651. Original inhabitants were the Nauset Tribe. The current population is around 6,000 and can quadruple in the summer.
Eastham is on the outer Cape. It stretches from Cape Cod Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. With seven bay beaches and two Atlantic. Coastguard beach on the Atlantic side has been chosen by National Geographic as the “Best Family Beach in the US”.
One third of the Cape Cod National Seashore is in Eastham. It is 44,000 acres. President Kennedy signed a bill that authorized the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, preserving the natural and historical resources.
Eastham is home to Cape Cod’s oldest working windmill, built in the 1680s, and the Cape Cod Rail Trail.
