Over the road from this cache is the old Morwell River Prison farm, it's now privately owned. So please don't disturb the occupants. From this spot 40 years ago, you would've seen numerous prison facilities, sheds, nursery operations, and a lot of human activity.
All of this region along Grand Ridge Rd (and adjoining roads) was cleared and populated in the early 1900's. It had a large population (over a thousand people lived in this area), but it was short lived. Due to the challenging weather conditions, steep terrain, the lengthy travel to and from the nearest towns (Foster, Toora, and Boolarra), this area was abandoned by the 1950's. In the 60's onwards, a lot of this area was then planted out with Mountain Ash trees by the prisoners of the Morwell River Prison Farm.
This prison was minimum security, the prisoners could come and go as they pleased, so long as they were back by nightfall. They had a large nursery on site for growing mountain ash, which the prisoners then planted to reforest the area.
Beware of traffic along the road (especially log trucks and gravel trucks). Road is passable in a 2WD vehicle, but it's gravel and bumpy in some areas.
If you go down frontage Rd, you'll pop out at the back entrance to the Morwell River Falls. Take care on this road, as it can be slippery in the winter.
