Geocaching began in May 2000, so 2025 is a year of celebrating 25 years of geocaching. Community Celebration events like this one are a special type of event to celebrate this milestone. They have a special icon and you get an online geocaching souvenir for attending.
This event will take place at Victoria Park and will have a variety of activities to celebrate 25 years, as well as time to chat to other geocachers. On arrival you can sign the log book and pick up a piece of paper with the available activities on. From there you choose what you would like to do. Activities include finding Signal the frog (geocaching mascot) in the surrounding area, geocacher bingo, quoits, photo scavenger hunt, and sharing geocaching memories with others. The list of available activities is uploaded to the gallery if you want to have a look before the event.
Community Celebration Events have to be 2 hours long, but you can come for whatever length of time suits you - come at the start, come at the end, come for the whole time, but come and celebrate 25 years of geocaching adventures!
The event location can be accessed from the wheelchair accessible Tawhairanui Trail, although there are shorter tracks leading to it from the playground carpark.
Please make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen if it is a hot day, there isn't any shade at the event location unfortunately. There is a drinking fountain a short walk away by the toilets in the playground carpark. There is one picnic table, you might like bring a picnic blanket or deck chair with you. Feel free to bring a picnic, and any outdoor games you like but the location is on a slope so ball games might be tricky! If it is too wet/windy the event will be postponed.
