War Memorial Day #2025 ~ Heaton Park
An event held on the 11th Annual War Memorial Day, which started in 2014 and is now into it's eleventh year, so quite an achievement! I've decided to place this event near the war memorial situated in Heaton Park on the outskirts of Manchester, which is also a Community Celebration Event too that happens to also be a follow up to my picnic event from 2022 - itself a Community Celebration Event too! We can all enjoy an evening summer picnic in this beautiful park, recently voted the sixth best in the country! The event will take place 6:30pm - 8:30pm.
This year I've decided to bring you to Heaton Park, which is a lovely place to have a picnic, and also is perfect for War Memorial Day given the history of the park being used in both the First and Second World Wars. For instance, the park was used during World War 1 as a training camp for the Pals battalions of the Manchester Regiment, whilst Heaton Hall became a military hospital at the time. Later during World War 2, the park was used as a camp for the Royal Air Force, where 133,516 aircrew were trained, with the park also being home to a barrage balloon anchorage and an ackack emplacement.
On the day, I'm planning to bring some home made savoury food based on the number of will attends to the event, though it would be awesome for peeps to also bring a variety of snacks and foods to add to the picnic and for everyone to enjoy. It doesn't have to be anything major, just bring along whatever you fancy on the day. It may also be the case that a few hides are published on the day, so watch this space!
There is parking available near the entrance of the park, though this is a park and display, whereas there is free parking available a little further away, with two separate waypoints indicating both locations.
I look forward to seeing you on the day for geo chat & any smaller TBs are welcome - though large ones will be turned away!
