Event location: The gazebo at Three Forks Pond
Montana was a little bit late to geocaching compared to other areas, and no geocaches were published in Montana in 2000. The true oldest cache in the state was only ever found by five users and was archived within a year. However, the second, third, fourth, and fifth hides published in the state are all still around today. In fact, Montana is one of only a few states with multiple oldest active caches hidden on the same day. While we cannot celebrate a full 25 years like some places, it has been more than 24.5 years, which technically rounds to 25. These oldies are worth celebrating regardless.
The two oldest active caches are located near the Three Forks confluence, so it was only fitting to celebrate nearby. Stay for a little while or a long while. I will be making hamburgers and/or hot dogs. Please feel free to bring a side to share. It would probably be good to bring an extra chair, as seating will be limited. The pond nearby is great for swimming or wading, or for launching a non-motorized watercraft. You are welcome to fish nearby if you have the appropriate license. As usual, I will have some giveaway prizes.
OPTIONAL: After the event has concluded, anyone interested can join for an excursion up to Fairweather GC492. This will probably take around 90 minutes. Car pooling is encouraged.
FYI: Missouri Headwaters GC493 is located in Missouri Headwaters State Park, and requires an $8 fee for each non-resident entrant, and for any resident who doesn't pay the state parks fee in their annual vehicle registration. Because of this, it will not be part of the optional excursion. As the numbers show, this one has been found by nearly twice as many geocachers compared to Fairweather, anyway.
