Join us for a Community Celebration Event and earn an icon (for the Event), a souvenir (for Winter Solstice weekend) and a treasure (if you have your treasures set to Celebrating GIFF). Not the trifecta that most mean when referring to geocaching, but a trifecta none the less. The event will be hosted indoors in our church fellowship hall; park in the lower parking lot and enter through the door in the corner. We will have coffee and water to drink. Fill free to bring a snack to share if you desire. Please note that while the church is located in the Central Time Zone, the event is Eastern Time!
December 20th boasts of many "days of celebration" and we will recognize several. The first is "Games Day." You will have to opportunity to check out the vintage "Voyage to Cachelandia" game from Going Caching 2022. There will be cards available if you and your friends want to play a game or two.

Next we celebrate International Human Solidarity Day. Our church has a food pantry that is open to residents in our area and Thanksgiving and Christmas tend to deplete all area food pantries and this is no exception. Get a tour of the pantry. Bring non-perishable food items or personal toiletry items to help restock (optional).

Mudd Day is also 'celebrated' on Dec 20. This marks the birthday of Dr. Samuel Mudd, a physician who harbored John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of President Lincoln, Mudd set Booth's broken leg and gave him a place to sleep. There is an ongoing controversy regarding how much Mudd was involved in the conspiracy to kill the President. He was sentenced to life in prison and moved to a federal prison in the Dry Tortugas. When the prison doctor died from yellow fever, Dr. Mudd stepped in as the prison doctor. He was pardoned by Andrew Johnson in 1869. Contrary to popular belief, the expression "your name is mud" did not come from Dr. Mudd but it did give it new meaning. In the 16th century this expression refered to something worthless or unwholesome. (My mugglish husband could refer to our beloved hobby as mud).

Go Caroling Day!
While we will not leave to go caroling we might just break out into a song or two. In your will attend log, include your favorite Christmas carol.

Sacagawea Day honoring Lemhi Shoshone woman who was a key interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The date is based on the estimated date of her death in 1812. The day celebrates the contributions and courage of Sacagawea, who traveled with the Corps of Discovery from present-day North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean. She helped establish peaceful relations with Native American tribes and was an invaluable guide and interpreter during the expedition. And to to think this was well before our modern day GPS.

National Wreaths Across America Day is traditionally the third Saturday in December, which this year just happens to be on Dec 20. During this event, volunteers will be placing remembrance wreaths at over 4,900 locations nationwide to honor fallen military service members and their families. The event is part of a larger mission to "Remember, Honor, and Teach" the value of freedom. I will have cards to sign encouraging my two active duty soldiers. Feel free to bring cards to sign for other service members.

and last but not least the birthday of James Melvin Johnson, Sr. My grandfather was born in 1919 in the hollers of Lee County, Virginia. He married my grandmother in 1940. He served in the Army as a truck driver in WWII and took part in the liberation of some of Germany's concentration camps.

This Event is part of a limited release of Community Celebration Events to celebrate 25 years of geocaching. Geocachers hosted events between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. Learn more about Community Celebration Events on the Geocaching Blog.
