Geocache Description:

25 Years of Geocaching and 10 Years of tree Planting at Horsbere Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme

Join us celebrating 10 years of tree planting at Horsbere Brook FAS. Since taking on management of the site in 2014 with the help of dedicated volunteers, many of which are geocachers, over 9500 trees have been planted across site.

Planting began in 2015 with 250 trees which would start the community woodland. Over the subsquent years several successful funding bids and repeated donations from The Woodland Trust free tree scheme have seen 1000s of trees rehomed in hedges (2017, 2018, 2019), woodlands (2015-2023), the orchard (2015) and hazel copse (2015, 2016). To celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee Woodland Cliff's Wood (857 trees) was planted (the first Queen's Green Canopy Woodland in Gloucester) and the two other QGC Woodlands on The Mound (3687 trees).

Since planting, and several CITO event and volunteer days later, the 'tree care' sessions have seen these trees establish and thrive onsite celebrating their first years of blossom, the first fruits, the first years of creating shade, the first year of growing without a stake, the first years as song posts or resting stop for birds heart

Join us celebrating this mementous year with some (small scale) tree planting (in the larger Queens Green Canopy Woodland) and a bring and a share picnic (in the Orchard).

How: The Countryside Ranger will be there providing guidance and tools necessary for the tree planting. Drop by if you have any time to spare and don't worry about not knowing what to do - there are lots of different tasks and lots of friendly volunteers to offer help and advice.

Parking: Suggested parking is in the car park at the provided coords by the gates leading in to the Reserve. Please car share where possible and avoiding blocking access (for the farmer and Environment Agency) up the farm track and on to the embankment.

Where: Meet by the main gate at 10:30 (parking coords) or find us in the new Queen's Green Canopy Woodland on The Mound (published coords) for the tree planting. Our 'base camp' will be at the commerative bench - we won't be far away! Alternatively join us for the picnic (picnic coordinates) - bring and share (or just bring your own food if you prefer).

Health and Safety: The session and will be covered by Council insurance as long as you are working under the Countryside Ranger's instruction.

We ask you to bring your own gloves, all other tools provided.

Please make sure you bring along your own refreshments as it can be thirsty work.

Please also share any photos from previous tree planting onsite, and those you take on the day in the log or on the @FriendsofHorsbere facebook pages - thank you!
