Geocache Description:

25 Years of Geocaching Show-n-Tell

      Games, Food, Fun, Fellowship, Prizes

Celebrating 25 years of geocaching is a remarkable milestone for this global treasure-hunting community. Since its inception in 2000, geocaching has become a popular activity for adventurers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.

  • The very first geocache, placed by Dave Ulmer in Oregon on May 3, 2000, marked the start of the geocaching movement. It was a simple container, a bucket with a logbook and a few trinkets, hidden in the woods. This moment is a milestone that has since evolved into millions of caches placed all over the world.
  • The creation of Geocaching.com by Jeremy Irish, Bryan Roth, and Elias Alvord allowed people to log their finds, share stories, and create a centralized platform for all things geocaching. The website became the heart of the community and a key tool for geocachers.
  •  Early geocachers often had to rely on simple handheld GPS devices and paper maps. Community events and early geocacher meetups laid the groundwork for the strong friendships and sense of camaraderie that are still central to the activity.

**Bring and share your stories, your old GPS devices, cache containers, Geocoins/Travel Bugs to discover, we will play several games (not required) to attend but for those that want to:

**Exciting opportunity to be part of Geocaching TB History - I am excited 🙂 to announce that I will be bringing a very old and special TB # 610061 to our event.
** (see photo) Check out the cache page. It is a traveling TB hotel...if you would like to bring your own TB, pathtag, or sticker to be permanently attached please feel free to do so, I will provide the glue.

**Swag Bag Exchange - works just like any other exchange game - Bring a bag of swag to be traded with others.

**Oddball Travel Bug & Hitchhiker Contest - everyone in attendance will cast their vote for the most interesting, weird, funny, strange, unique (Please no microwaves, refrigerators, old water heaters, vehicle bumpers etc. keep them within reason)

**GIGA Bound Gold Ammo Can - any travel bugs or Geocoins you want to be dropped at GIGA Woodstock feel free to bring them and place them in the Gold Ammo Can.

**Food purchase is not required to attend but please do not bring in outside food or drink.

From its humble beginnings in 2000, geocaching has blossomed into a global adventure that celebrates exploration, nature, and community. As we mark 25 years in 2024, we can look back on a rich history filled with milestones that have shaped the hobby, and forward to a future where technology, sustainability, and community continue to drive the spirit of geocaching. Here's to another 25 years of discovery!

This Event is part of a limited release of Community Celebration Events to celebrate 25 years of geocaching. Geocachers hosted events between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. Learn more about Community Celebration Events on the Geocaching Blog.
