Advent Geonutshells 2024
SATURDAY 7th December 2024, Certovka channel, Prague
Join us during the Advent season to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holidays. We will meet for the 18th time near the Čertovka Channel in Prague, close to Charles Bridge.
Each participant should bring a small boat (e.g., made from a nutshell) with a candle. We will let these candle boats float in the Čertovka Channel and watch this spectacular show together. Historical buildings illuminated by hundreds of candle lights, happy children, new and old friends, and small gifts being exchanged create an unforgettable atmosphere. Don't forget to bring some Christmas food and drink to share with fellow geocachers. Geonutshells is a traditional Christmas event that takes place every year (since 2006) in mid-December. Although it started as a simple event, it has spontaneously grown into a mega-event, with more than 500 nicknames (over 1,000 individuals) attending each event in the last 10 years.
Why Geonutshells? The name is related to an old Czech Christmas tradition. On Christmas Eve, people make small boats, usually from walnut shells. They place small candles inside the boats, light them, and let them float on water in a large pot or washing-up bowl. The fun lies in predicting the future based on how far the boats float, how they stick together (or not), and other patterns.
Please bring your boats already prepared, made only from natural materials (use natural waxes and no plastic, as the boats end up in the Vltava), matches or a lighter, and don’t forget a glass for yourself and your team members, and some drink suitable for filling it (think of your children too). Other geocachers will also appreciate it if you offer them Christmas cookies, a flask, or another specialty.
You are warmly welcome.
