Hallett's Bridge
Opened in 1867, and named in honour of Alfred Hallett, the then Chairman of the Central Road Board, who declared the bridge open to traffic at the ceremony -
'In the name of the Great Architect of the Universe I declare this bridge open, and to be henceforth called Hallett's Bridge.'
Hallett was an eminent settler in the district. He arrived in South Australia in 1838 to work as a manager of his brother John Hallett’s Worthing Mine located between Reynella and Hallett Cove in what was at the time Hurtle Vale. During his time in the district he also acted as Justice of the Peace, and as the magistrate of the local court.
The “Great South Road” was in existence as early as 1840, the only route from Adelaide through O’Halloran Hill and Reynella to the early settlements at Willunga and Encounter Bay. It followed much the same route as Main South Road does today.
The bridge closed in December 1964 when Main South Road was opened.
In 1993 it was listed as a State Heritage Place in the SA Heritage Register.
