Geocache Description:

This cache placement is part of the Garland History GeoTour v2.0. Should you wish to download the GeoTour 2.0 passport to earn our beautiful new GeoCoin, you can find the GeoTour page here. The log will contain a secret word which you must enter on your passport in the appropriate slot.

Duck Creek Greenbelt Park contains the longest continuous trail in the northeastern corner of the County.  Following its namesake waterway between the northeastern Dallas suburbs of Richardson and Garland, Duck Creek Greenbelt offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the city with park benches, drinking fountains and a variety of scenic places to picnic along this beautiful greenbelt. The trail connects Troth Ablon Park, Gatewood Park and Cody Park, offering numerous amenities and a chance to view wildlife. The southern trailhead descends to link with the Mesquite Heritage Trail and the northern trailhead connects to Richardson via the Owens Trail.

You'll be in a part of the greenbelt known as Bass Park for your search. This cache can be completed during the day (if you gather the information needed to find the coordinates of the final--see below) or as a traditional night cache. The posted coordinates are the start of your night cache adventure. If doing this one during the day, you'll find a "Day Cache" parking waypoint that should get you a little head start on this one.

There will be minimal bushwhacking to get to the final, but be prepared, especially in the springtime, for new growth.

NIGHT CACHE:

Park at the posted coordinates. Note that, right at dusk, the parking lot lights come on, but this will not interfere with your search.

This park is very busy, even in the early part of nighttime. You're very likely to see others on your trek unless you come very late at night. Be courteous and try not to shine your light directly in the eyes of oncoming hikers.

For this hunt, you'll be on a concrete path for part of your search, and off the path for part of it. You'll need a bright flashlight, fully charged (or carry extra batteries). If you see reflectors on both sides of a path on this night cache adventure, you'll want to go between them. If you see reflectors only on one side, you'll want to turn in that direction.

As you exit your vehicle, you'll want to look around for a rust-colored steel bridge. Cross it and then start looking for reflectors. Hint: If you look to the right, you're going to see Duck Creek Road so you might look mostly ahead or to the left. As you proceed, look for occasional reflectors that are only there to let you know you're still on the right path.

Fire tacks are reflectors used to mark trails for hunting or for night caches. They reflect very brightly--in fact it almost looks like they are lit up like tiny light bulbs--but only if you use your flashlight correctly. Since fire tacks reflect back directly to the light source, if you hold your flashlight too low you may not see them at all, even if you have an extremely bright light. Instead, hold your flashlight up at approximately eye level so you won't miss any markers. They'll jump right out at you if you do this. Don't want anybody getting lost in Duck Creek at night.

Eventually you'll cross a second rust-colored bridge. Shortly after will be a turn, so be on the lookout. This turn will take you off the concrete path.

At some point you'll come across a telephone pole that will have several fire tacks arranged in the shape of an arrow. Determine which direction this arrow is pointing and go in that direction until you come to another concrete path. You'll want to look for more reflectors to determine which way you need to proceed on this path.

You're getting close now. When you find the final set of reflectors, one of each side of a sort of clearing, go in there and you'll see a small stand of woods on each side of you. Inside one of these stands of woods is where you'll find the final. You should see numerous bright reflectors at the location of the final.

This is where the bushwhacking might come in. But if you've made it this far, you won't have much further to go. Be sure to read the section below to learn how to open the cache as finding it is only the beginning.

After you're done, go back to the concrete path you just came from and turn left. You'll recognize where you are shortly after you cross that second rust-colored bridge again.

DAY CACHE

We've included a "day cache" parking waypoint which will make it easier and faster to find this cache in the daytime, so if you're doing this one during the day be sure to check that out.

You'll need the final coordinates, of course, which you will need to derive from the following caches in the Garland GeoTour 2.0 cache series:

GGT2.0 #10 Santa Fe Depot (A&B)
GGT2.0 #14 Fraternal Orgs (C&D)
GGT2.0 #20 Downtown Square (E&F)

Fill in the blanks for the coordinates to the final for daytime searching:

N 32 51.ABC W 96 37.DEF

We've enabled the coordinate checker (for daytime searchers) so you can ensure you're on the right track before you make the trip to Duck Creek.

OPENING THE CACHE

You'll need your flashlight for this part too, maybe even if you're doing it in the daytime. You'll see a blue birdhouse-style box with numbers written all over it. Single-digit numbers to be exact.

Once you figure out how to open the box (easy), you'll find a metal rod on a tether inside. Pull this out and determine which of the numbers written on the outside of the box will take a magnet. You're trying to find the digits of the combination to the padlock inside the box that secures the actual container.

Move the metal rod on and around each number until you've found the four digits you'll need to open the lock. Put them in order (search this listing for a clue as to the order) and open the lock. Inside, in addition to the log, you'll find a few cool trade items. As always, if you take something, leave something at least as good.

Please put the metal rod back in its little holder and be sure to firmly engage the lock and spin the wheels so as not to make it too easy for the next cacher. Close it up and make sure you leave no trace that you were ever there.

ABOUT THIS CONTAINER

This container was generously donated by ArlingtonTrains7, a good friend of the Garland GeoTour. He has built numerous gadget caches, each with its own theme. We'd like to thank him for the time it took to do this. If you're in need of a really cool gadget cache, look him up.
