HBJ Stadium, located at 1209 E Centerville Road, is named in honor of Garland football legend Homer B. Johnson. Born in 1927, Johnson grew up in Garland and graduated from Garland High School in 1944. He started his longtime athletic career by returning to his alma mater in 1948 after graduating from college to be the ‘B’ team coach of Garland High School. In 1950, he left Garland high School when he was drafted into the Army, where he served in the Korean War until 1953. From 1958 to 1962 he was the head coach of the Garland Owls and in 1963 he became the athletic director of Garland ISD. Johnson worked in GISD for 68 years till he retired in 2016. He remained a fixture at Garland ISD football games until 2019. Homer B. Johnson passed away on March 17, 2021, at age 93.
The $1.5 million stadium was originally named Memorial Stadium. It was dedicated on September 5, 1974, at the Garland High School vs Dallas W. W. Samuel High School game. At this time, Garland had three high schools and only one stadium, Williams Stadium. Unlike Williams Stadium, Memorial Stadium had a sunken field with Astroturf. The Garland Daily News called the stadium the “finest complex of its kind for high schools in Texas.” The stadium featured 7,6000 seats, a temperature-controlled pressbox, concession stands on each side, and separate dressing rooms for players, coaches and officials. Memorial Stadium was renamed Homer B. Johnson Stadium during the late 70s early 80s by the Garland Independent School District.
