Williams Funeral Home is Garland’s oldest business and even predates the city's incorporation. It started in 1885 when M. D.
Williams and his brother, Jasper, established Williams Dry Goods and Grocery Store in Duck Creek. The city of Garland was established in 1891 with M. D. Williams as Garland’s first mayor. The business was moved from Duck Creek to Downtown Garland in 1896. The business sold food, farming supplies, clothes and coffins. In 1920, the business discontinued their merchandising to expand exclusively to funeral direction. Williams Funeral Home became a family business with M. D. Williams’ son, Cecil Williams, grandson, Marion , and great-grandson, Marion Davis Williams IV, eventually joined the firm.
The business quickly outgrew the building on the square at Main and Sixth Street, and built a new facility at Main and Glenbrook in 1931. The facility went under a major remodeling and redecoration project in 1970. It included an addition of an 11,000-foot building, with a large chapel seating 350, a lounge, four reposing rooms, casket selection room, coffee bar, TV lounge and spacious executive offices. In 2003, the firm relocated to a new facility at 1600 S. Garland Ave, adjacent to Garland Memorial Park.
