Welcome to the Roaring Run Trail in Armstrong County, PA! This nearly 5 mile trail runs along the eastern shore of the Kiskiminetas (Kiski) River to the south to the borough of Apollo. Along this trail, remnants of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal (circa 1825-1850) can be seen. These remnants include stone survey markers, a portion of the canal lock at the mouth of Roaring Run, and the bridge abutments for the tow path that crossed Flat Run. This section also includes a separate 1.5 mile extension, called the Rock Furnace Trail. This area is managed and maintained by the Roaring Run Watershed Association, Apollo, PA. For more information and a map, see http://www.roaringrunapollo.org
The RRT caches can be accessed from either the Edmon or the Rock Furnace Trailhead (see parking waypoints). The Rock Furnace Trail (RFT) is 1.5 miles of a crushed limestone trail that runs along Roaring Run. It is of various elevations. Once the RFT meets the Roaring Run Trail (RRT), the trail flattens out and follows the Kiski River.
For the most part, the RRT caches are not far from the trail. In some cases, this wasn't possible, but I tried to keep them close and only into more open areas. But be aware, you will possibly encounter high weeds, jaggers, and poison ivy during the late spring to early fall seasons.
