You are looking for a Halloween Head literally on a stick. This cache is hidden very differently from the original Head on a Stick and hopefully won't wander off. To find the bison tube holding the log sheet, you DO NOT need to dislodge the stick from its spot. You'll need to do a little bushwhacking off the trail, but you should spy the head fairly easily.
RAIL TRAIL UPDATE: A lot has transpired since I hid the original cache in July, 2018. About a year ago (I'm writing this is July, 2024) the City of Sanford banned motorized vehicles (ATVs, dirt bikes and such) with the exception of the portion that is Snowmobile ITS 89 during the winter (snowmobiles only) and declared the trail an official city park. Class 1 & 2 electric bikes and bona fide handicapped conveyances are allowed. Maintenance vehicles are allowed with permission/notification to the Parks & Rec Department. The Trails Committee is scheduling trail upgrades (delayed by the destruction from the early April 2024 storm) and will do as much as the City Trails Committee finances will allow each year until the Sanford/Lebanon Line is reached. Land abutting parts of the rail trail has been acquired by Three Rivers Land Trust (Sanford Community Forest) and the Mousam Way Land Trust (McKeon Reserve). A LOT is happening!!
PS Don't forget to look for the coordinates of Quirky Crustacean in the caches beyond the Carpenter's Crossing Bridge! Two caches have the full coordinates. This gives you a cache to find on the way back to the Hanson's Ridge Rd trailhead, provided that's where you parked.
