Geocache Description:

The Bethania Lutheran Church and Cemetery in Queensland are heritage listed.  At the middle of the 19th century a group of people in East Pommern (now Poland) made their way to Australia.  It was a poverty driven reason to leave Pommern.  After a long and horrible journey they arrived in Moreton Bay.  They had to overcome some quarantine problems and after that they went a shore.  The "Germans" got land allocations below the Logan river.  That is were they founded Bethania.  Life was harsh for the immigrants from North-East Europe in the muggy heat of Queensland.

Bethania Church was built in 1872. It is a historic building (the oldest Lutheran Church in Queensland) and contains a cemetery of early settlers. It was designated as a world heritage site on 21 October 1992. This cemetery, number 255 in the Australian Cemeteries Index, is owned and maintained by the Bethania Lutheran Church.  This area was once under Albert & Logan Shire, then the Gold Coast Shire and now Logan City Council.

The aboriginal people called the area Kara Kara.  The early settlers named the locality Bethanien which was the German spelling of Bethany, a town in Palestine.
