TangtuTemple'sTURDiness Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

firewaterspirit: The container has gone missing yet again. I am disabling the cache until I can source a new one, but this may take a while as it is rather specialized. ... And after so many disappearances, I will have to find a new way to install and secure it. Thanks for your patience and happy caching!

Geocache Description:

Hopefully the location is also of interest to some...  This cache replaces the previous one Tangtu TB Reincarnations (GC8YTPN) which was not possible to maintain to do its size and conspicuous nature. This is hopefully better cammoflauged.  PLEASE use FULL STEALTH MODE to retrieve and replace the cache EXACTLY as found!  Don't forget a TOTT to retrieve and pen to sign LOG.

Traditionally cremation grounds (kuburan) in Bali are beside the temple Pura Prajapati and usually found by the sea. Twelve days after the cremation ceremony itself (Ngaben), family members sprinkle their loved one's ashes in the sea to allow for the release of the spirits to the next realm (where the Hindu believe they will await reincarnation or be released from the cycle of earthly existence).

If you're lucky, you will have the chance to experience an auspicious day for a Ngaben as the entire ceremony is unique and interesting, and the ENTIRE community is involved. The ones at this small local cremation ground tend not to be as ornate or extensive as some of the main cremation areas on the island such as in Sanur or Ubud, but the rituals and sentiments are the same.

Even if you don't get to see a cremation ceremony, this beach is home to some other completely unique Balinese phenomena... From June-September, it's KITE SEASON (not rainy season or dry season... really... the locals call it KITE season), and if you come in the afternoon, you will be treated to groups flying, adapting and re-launching their kites - some with tails up to 30 meters!!!  And while this happens all over the island (but especially on the east coast at this time of year), only TANGTU is home to the unique propellor whirly-gigs:  by the parking, you will find young men whittling their propellor to achieve just the right SOUND as it get singing with the wind!

From here, you can access the two other best caches on the island!
1. Walk up the river walk to "GC85DYX: Croaked Thousands of Years Ago" (https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC85DYX).

2. Safely cross the river, either at the mouth of the river (watch locals for best spot that day), or half way to "Croaked" via the steps down to the river (and back up on the other side) to access "GC810DA: Give Yourself up to Reckless Abandon GC" https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC810DA

Happy Caching!
