Wanderbare Alz:
Long Way Up [36km]
Formel:
N48° 0 [n + j + y] . [q + g + w + cc] [f + m + u + aa] [a + e + p + ff]
E12° 3 [b + r + z] . [k + d + s + bb] [x + h + t + ee] [c + v + l + dd]
Schlosscode:
[x + h + t + ee] [c + v + l + dd] [a + e + p + ff]
Bahn: von Garching a.d. Alz Bhf mit der
RB 45 bzw
Half Way Up (GCAX40G)

Wanderable Alz:
Long Way Up [36km]
A picture search cache along the River Alz between Marktl am Inn and Garching an der Alz.
Compare the image details at the 30 stations with the prominent objects and use them to calculate the hiding place of the letterbox.
Only the values from the ORANGE boxes at the bottom right of each picture are required for the calculation (see example).
Formula:
N48° 0 [n + j + y] . [q + g + w + cc] [f + m + u + aa] [a + e + p + ff]
E12° 3 [b + r + z] . [k + d + s + bb] [x + h + t + ee] [c + v + l + dd]
Lock combination:
[x + h + t + ee] [c + v + l + dd] [a + e + p + ff]
The stamp and the pad are not trade items and should be left in the cache. Much appreciated!
Overview:
The hike follows the Alz upstream and is only intended in one direction. This is also the recommended direction for visiting the stages, so they are clearly marked and unique identifyable.
The start is at Marktl station, the end is before Garching station (or Burgkirchen station for the half way hike).
Routing:
The route does not run entirely directly along the riverbanks, but deviates in places to ensure better passage.
After point 06 and point 10, the track leaves the immediate riverbank onto the parallel Alzradweg path.
A change to the other side of the river takes place at the Emmertinger Bücke (trailhead B1 after point 14) and at the Burgkirchen pedestrian bridge (trailhead B2 after point 18) and further on at the Alzsteg near Hart (trailhead B3 after point 26).
Overall, the route is relatively moderate due to its proximity to the river and is only very slightly uphill throughout.
Crossing the Mühlbach ford between Burgkirchen and Hirten:
The ford in the overflow of the Walder Mühlbach between Burgkirchen (trailhead D1) and Hirten is dry most of the year round except for a few days. After heavy rain and even a few days later, however, it can carry water. In this case, I recommend taking the alternative route to the district road and returning to the riverside path at the next opportunity (trailhead D2). There are no extra points for crossing the water.
Parking:
Parking is also available free of charge at the Marktl, Burgkirchen and Garching railway stations, for example.
Travelling by public transport:
By train: from Garching a.d. Alz Bhf with the RB 45 or RB 47 via Mühldorf and to Marktl Bhf with the RB 41 (travel time approx. 55 min)
Alternatively with several vehicles at the start and end.
For the first half Marktl - Burgkirchen see ‘Half Way Up’ - there you will find detailed information about this part.
For the second half Burgkirchen - Garching: from Garching a.d. Alz Bhf take the RB 47 to Tüssling and continue with the RB 42 to Burgkirchen Bhf (travel time approx. 45 min) or alternatively on weekdays with bus route 71 (journey time approx. 25 min).
Tip: Bicycles can usually be taken on the SOB at no extra charge.
For velocipedists:
The track is not ideal for bicycles throughout. A large section leads along well-maintained footpaths and forest tracks.
I would describe the section around the mouth of the Alz (between points 04 and 07), before Emmerting (between points 12 and 14) and further on between Burgkirchen and Hirten (trailhead B2 and points 21) as "limited cycle suitability". Wind breakage along the paths can also be expected at any time.
Snacks and drinks for your well-being:
In Marktl the path leads directly past a supermarket, in Burgkirchen there is a shopping area with supermarkets and a bakery about 200 metres away from the track.
In Emmerting, the sports- and shotingrage Hohenwart is catered and is located directly on the trail.
There are other places to stop for refreshments a bit off the track in all towns.
Long pants and insect repellent is recommended all year round - you're in a TBE county.
Break and picnic areas:
There are plenty of opportunities for breaks and picnics along the way, as well as direct access to the Alz for cooling off.
Benches, sometimes even with tables, can be found on a regular base.
Toilets:
Unfortunately, there are no public toilets directly along the trail. These can only be reached by taking a diversion if necessary.
Geocaching by-catch:
By-catch along the way is only available to a very limited extent or is not directly on the trail. Some of these are fishing caches directly on the trail.
Half Way Up (GCAX40G)
The stages of this cache correspond exactly to stages 01-17 for the hike from Marktl to Burgkirchen. The values in the blue boxes at the bottom left of the respective picture are required for the other calculation.
Environmental request:
You are partly in the nature reserve "Untere Alz".
Leave nothing behind but your footprints!
Don't take anything but your pictures!
Please do not leave any food scraps or rubbish along the way - even paper tissues or banana peels take up to 5 years to decompose. Beside of a rubbish bags, a dog poop bags, for example, are also suitable for transport your remnants to a suitable rubbish bin.
Exmample:
If you find the image detail shown at point 01, the value for a = +3

Additional hint:
The letters "i" und "o" are not in use on purpose ... for better readability (also of your own writing).
Über den Cache / About the cache
It is a challenging hiking cache - but also a cache for outdoor enthusiasts.
The letterbox ‘Half Way Up’ offers the opportunity to divide this route into 2 (still almost day-long) stages. Of course, there are many more ways to divide up the route, which each hiker can work out for themselves.
During my planning and test hike in August ‘24, I was out and about all day, including a photo shoot and measuring, and it was perfectly feasible in one day. There's nothing wrong with chopping up the stages further - I can only recommend doing the whole route once over time. It's a wonderful route that I hadn't even considered before.
I look forward to the story about your hike, the packing list for your snack box, a picture with your feet in the Alz and a drink in your hand.
