Melaka is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site that is crammed with interesting things to see.
Coronation Park is located along Jalan Kota facing the People’s Museum and is built to commemorate the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne in June 1953. It is now known as Taman Bunga Merdeka. The few things that you can find in this park are as follows :
a) A replica bullock cart (pulled by a pair of concrete bullocks).
b) A propeller powered Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer CC Mk 1 aircraft named ‘Lang Rajawali’ said to be the first aircraft obtained by the newly formed Royal Malayan Airforce in January 1962.
c) A decommissioned diesel locomotive named Sungai Lukut 21111 (built in Japan in 1965) together with an attached vintage railway carriage which is now used as a souvenir shop.
d) A vintage yellow fire engine,
e) The City Cross which marks the spot where St. Francis Xavier first set foot in Malacca in 1545. The spot was on the shore line in those days.
f) A war memorial obelisk with inscriptions on four sides commemorating those who died for the British side in the Sungai Ujong War of 1875-6. It is a war fought against Malay chiefs rebelling against British colonial taxes!
The Train
This write up touches on the the train. The name of the locomotive is SUNGAI LUKUT 21111. This is a Class 21 Train which was delivered in 2 batches. The first in 1965 and the second in 1968. There are 15 locomotive in first batch (21101-21115) and 10 locomotive in second batch (21201-21210). As this locomotive is numbered 21111, it would be from the first batch delivered in 1965. This class of train was not an outstanding success but nevertheless, they served Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) for more than a quarter of a century.
The Class 21 trains probably carried the biggest variety of liveries of any Malaysian class. They started life in green (1960s), maroon (1970s), orange / yellow (early 1980s) and silver (late 1980s). Presently, it is painted in green.
The Class 21 trains were built by Kisha Seizo of Japan in 1965. It is a diesel hydraulic locomotive with engine made by Mercedes Benz MB820DB with 1,060 horsepower. It weighs 52 tons. The train was decommissioned in the 1990s.
The Geocache
To find the geocache, start your journey at the Buffer Stop or Bumper Block at the front of the train. While standing in front of the Bumper Block facing the train, move two steps to your left. Then take a walk around the train in the south Westerly direction and then turn right at the end the turn right again until you are back at the Bumper Block. While going around the train, take note of the info on the train shown by the two (2) photo below.
