Geocache Description:

Granite is a magmatic rock with a gritty structure, i.e. made up of grains, which is entirely crystallised and whose crystals are clearly visible to the naked eye. The word "granite" comes from the Latin granum, which means grain.

The “Quenouille du Diable” is a menhir located in the commune of Silfiac (Morbihan), although it can be reached via Lescouët-Gouarec, which is a commune in the Côtes d'Armor, and marks the border between the Côtes d'Armor and Morbihan. Its other name is the Moustoir menhir, the name of the nearest locality (in the commune). It is thought to date from the Neolithic period.

Vocabulaire géologique / To validate your discovery

Phenocrystal, or phenoblast (n.) from Greek phaineîn, to appear, and blastos, bud. Large crystal in a magmatic rock.

Porphyry: “Porphyry” is a general petrographic term for any vein-type magmatic rock with a texture characterized by large feldspar crystals embedded in an aphanitic paste. These rocks often belong to the andesite group. A rock is also said to have a porphyritic texture when feldspar phenocrysts are notably larger than the other crystals surrounding them.

Porphyroblast: A porphyroblast is a large crystal (up to several centimeters), clearly larger than the other crystals in the rock, developed in a metamorphic or magmatic rock.

The geological zone in which the rocks you are about to observe are located is the Rostrenen porphyroid granite zone. This granite is characterized by the presence of feldspars reaching 10 to 12 cm, or even 15 cm in length and 2 to 3 cm in cross-section, with a flattened, usually mottled exterior, or a squat, square cross-section.

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery

Go to the Devil's Cattail and discover the 4 boulders located at the coordinates of this earthcache. You'll need to take a close look at the “warts”, i.e. the phenalcrystals present on these rocks, to be able to answer the following questions:

Question 1 - Are all porphyroblasts the same size and shape? Describe the shapes you can observe.

Question 2 - Can you see different colored areas of porphyroblasts on any of these rocks? What color can you see besides white and gray?

Obligatory souvenir photo - Please post in your log a photo of yourself or one of your favorite geocaching objects (or even just your username written on a sheet of paper or your hand) with the devil's cattail in the background.

Log in this "Found it" cache with your photo in your log and send me your answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com (Message Center) mail, and I will contact you in case of a problem.

To remind: there is no box to find to validate an earthcache! You can log your discovery but also send me your answers as soon as possible.
