The term "jet set" refers to a social group of wealthy and fashionable people (“celebrities”) who travel frequently and often by jet for pleasure or business. Many celebrity gossip magazines report on the coming and goings of these jet setters. Below are a few of the more unusual jet set happenings throughout the years:
- U.S. airlines are losing money. Anxious to recoup, at least one is turning to an old gimmick – live entertainment – to bolster the trade. Among the first of the live entertainers are veteran interracial comedy team, Slappy White and Steve Rossi. They left from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on a National Overseas Airways flight to Spain. The team pranced the aisle much in the manner of entertainers who can’t stay put on stage and must get down into the audience to get the close people-to-people feel. After landing in Spain White said, “We played to a capacity crowd aboard the plane and nobody walked out on us.”
- Jazz great, Charles Mingus went to Mexico after a friend told him of the Mexican dancer, Panchita, who had had a “kitchen knife operation” for cancer and was dancing again 10 years later. “We were on the plane for Mexico the next week.” Seven months later, he died.
- Michael Jackson and family aboard aborted flight from New York to Los Angeles. “ I’m glad you’re on this flight because the same force that saved you from the flames while you were filming the Pepsi commercial also saved you from a plane that would have plunged if the takeoff had not been aborted.”
- People are talking about flamboyant Cleveland couple Grant and Betty Wills, and how they turned on that recent Anthropos Club Sweethearts Dance at Cleveland’s Host House. The couple arrived in a white Brougham Cadillac, Wills wearing a fur coat and Mrs Wills in a white Mongolia fur coat. After checking their wraps, the couple strolled casually into the main ballroom to the spellbound “o—o—hs” and _"a—a-ahs” of an audience stunned by their outfits: Wills in a blue velvet jacket with stripe knit pants to match and Mrs Wills wearing Chester Weinberg original – a candle-light satin gown featuring the nude look, plunging down to the waist!
- Nude “Stew” creates furor over her photos in Playboy. The friendly skies were disturbed and there was a furor in the clouds when a gorgeous bronze Pacific Southwest Airlines stewardess, using the pseudonym of Ester Cordet, appeared in all her considerable glory in the October issue of Playboy Magazine. The captivating Miss Cordet smiled through the entire spread, but her sister stewardesses were infuriated. Generally saying they are working to dispel the “we’ll really move our tail for you” and “coffee tea or me” image of flight stewardesses…”
- So well-liked is the Living Room’s resident jazzman, pianist Art Simmons that a delegation of his friends journeyed out to Orly Airport to wave goodbye as he jetted to Hawaii for a months vacation. Why’d Art choose Hawaii? He wouldn’t say, but we bet it’s because he’s been asked to give a few more lessons to his long-time piano student, the outlandishly wealthy tobacco heiress Doris Duke, who also likes Hawaii in August.
- Hollywood night club singer Dorothy Dandridge says she clicks with customers because she psychoanalyzes them before she sings to them. Because she was scared by night club audiences she took a course in psychology at UCLA trying to find out what made people “tick”. “Now," she says, “I can spot the different types the minute I see them at their tables and I pick a special song for each type.”
