Geocache Description:

Look for the footpath sign on Wainfleet bank, that points towards St Mary Church.

This is an idyllic spot, where, depending on the time of day, you will see many species of birds including Buzzards, as well as the local Roe and Muntjac Deer. If you take the footpath to the church, make sure any dogs are on leads are there are often horses in the first field.

The church of St Mary has served this scattered community for about nine hundred years. The tower with its peal of six bells has a Norman base, but was later heightened in the Perpendicular style. The west door, lancet windows and blank arcading are Early English.

An impressive rood screen fills the chancel arch. The Barkham family followed by The Bethlehem Hospital were one-time patrons and local landowners. In its origins, traditions and practice, St Mary’s has always been known as ‘High Church’ and therefore has a rich, Anglo-Catholic tradition. Enter the churchyard by the lychgate and experience its unique peace and tranquillity.
