Geocache Description:


St Mary's Church was originally built between 1856 and 1859 by the Monteith family of Carstairs. in 1907 it was all but destroyed by fire. A Gothic Revival cruciform church was built in 1908-1910 with Dublin architects Ashlin & Coleman responsible for the design and funded by grants and fundraising by parishioners. The 144-ft spire can be seen from miles around. Remarkable interior decoration including imposing reredos of Caen stone and marble, statues of St Mungo, St Margaret and St Columba and fine stained glass. It is a category A listed building.
