Le château de Châlucet, est un site médiéval fortifié qui a connu une histoire riche et mouvementée depuis sa construction au XIIe siècle. Bâti sur un éperon rocheux dominant la rivière Briance, il servait initialement à contrôler les voies de communication entre Limoges et le sud de la région, tout en assurant la sécurité de ses occupants.

Mais le château de Châlucet est également le symbole de l’histoire mouvementée de la région, mêlant pouvoir féodal, conflits militaires, et banditisme.

Origines et construction (XIIᵉ siècle)

Le château de Châlucet est fondé vers le XIIᵉ siècle par des seigneurs locaux, probablement pour renforcer leur pouvoir face aux ambitions des vicomtes de Limoges. Dès le début, le château comprend un donjon, des murailles et une série de bâtiments défensifs. Il est divisé en deux parties : le Haut Castrum, où se trouve le donjon carré, et le Bas Castrum, ajouté par la suite et destiné aux garnisons et aux habitants.

Un refuge pour les brigands (XIVᵉ siècle)

Au XIVᵉ siècle, durant la guerre de Cent Ans, le château devient un repaire de routiers et de brigands qui exploitent la faiblesse des pouvoirs locaux pour contrôler et piller la région. Châlucet passe plusieurs fois de mains entre les Français et les Anglais, devenant un enjeu stratégique important. Ces routiers, qui se nourrissent du chaos ambiant, utilisent le château comme base pour organiser des raids et des pillages, créant ainsi une terreur dans la région.

La destruction et le déclin (XVIᵉ siècle)

Face à l’ampleur des violences, le roi Henri IV ordonne la destruction partielle de Châlucet à la fin du XVIᵉ siècle, afin d’éradiquer définitivement cette menace. Une grande partie du château est démantelée, et le site est progressivement abandonné. Devenu ruine, le château perd son rôle militaire et tombe peu à peu dans l'oubli.

Châlucet Castle is a fortified medieval site which has had a rich and eventful history since its construction in the 12th century. Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Briance River, it was initially used to control the communication routes between Limoges and the south of the region, while ensuring the safety of its occupants.

But the Château de Châlucet is also the symbol of the turbulent history of the region, mixing feudal power, military conflicts, and banditry.

Origins and construction (12th century)

Châlucet castle was founded around the 12th century by local lords, probably to strengthen their power in the face of the ambitions of the viscounts of Limoges. From the beginning, the castle included a keep, walls and a series of defensive buildings. It is divided into two parts: the Haut Castrum, where the square keep is located, and the Bas Castrum, added later and intended for garrisons and inhabitants.

A refuge for bandits (14th century)

In the 14th century, during the Hundred Years' War, the castle became a den of highwaymen and brigands who exploited the weakness of local authorities to control and pillage the region. Châlucet passed hands several times between the French and the English, becoming an important strategic issue. These raiders, who feed on the surrounding chaos, use the castle as a base to organize raids and pillaging, thus creating terror in the region.

Destruction and decline (16th century)

Faced with the scale of the violence, King Henry IV ordered the partial destruction of Châlucet at the end of the 16th century, in order to definitively eradicate this threat. A large part of the castle was dismantled, and the site was gradually abandoned. Having become a ruin, the castle lost its military role and gradually fell into oblivion.
