Now on to the learning:
Quartz is a common mineral found in many types of rocks, characterized by its hardness and durability. It is composed of silicon and oxygen, making it a silicate mineral. In igneous rocks, quartz often appears as clear, white, or pink crystals and is a significant component of granite. In sedimentary rocks like sandstone, quartz grains can be abundant, having been worn down and transported by erosion. In metamorphic rocks, quartz can appear in forms such as quartzite, where it has recrystallized under high pressure and temperature. Its resistance to weathering and erosion means that quartz frequently persists in rock formations over geological time scales.
Questions to answer:
1. Quartz is made of what? Use the reading.
2. How is quartzite made? Use the reading.
3. What kind of rock is the big one at GZ? Why? Use the quartz to help identify.
4. Post a photo of yourself (doesn't need to be your face) or a personal object at a rock nearby that has crystals imbedded in it. Do not take a photo of the one at GZ. Post in your log. (Optional)
Afterwards, send me your answers.
