Sin duda ésta escultura llama la atención por su dramatismo y cuando conoces su significado algo se remueve por dentro.
El monumento es recuerdo y homenaje a 11 ciudadanos eldenses deportados a los campos de concentración durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial después de exiliarse tras la Guerra Civil Española en 1939.
En el brazo y en la pierna aparecen grabados los números que tenían tatuados para ser identificados en el campo de concentración.
El objetivo del artista ha sido representar a una persona aplastada, símbolo de los trabajos que los presos de Mauthausen realizaron ya que, en este campo de concentración, los detenidos tenían que cargar a sus espaldas piedras de 20 kilos de peso y subirlas desde una cantera.

MÁS COSAS EN 160 METROS A LA REDONDA

Por ejemplo detrás del monumento está el edificio “Torre Dos de Mayo”, popularmente conocido como "La Torre". Es uno de los más altos de Elda y responde a la moda de construir rascacielos que se dio en los años 70.
Enfrente de la escultura está el parque Adolfo Suárez pero no preguntes a nadie de Elda, con ese nombre por el parque porque no sabrán decirte dónde está. Hasta hace poco se llamaba “Jardín de la Concordia" pero como realmente es conocido es como " La Cruz de los Caídos".
Cruz que se encuentra al final del parque oculta entre palmeras y que responde a los típicos monumentos clasicistas de la posguerra que hay en muchas poblaciones.
Parte de parque también fue cementerio de Elda entre 1815 y 1903. Su construcción vino dada por la Orden de Carlos III que por higiene prohibía el enterramiento regular de personas dentro de Iglesias y recomendaba que los cementerios estuvieran a las afueras de la ciudad y en lugar aireado. Es decir en 1815 aquí no habían casas.
Lo que si había era el “Camino Real” que más tarde fue la antigua carretera N- 330 o carretera Ocaña- Alicante que cruzó Elda hasta 1975 que fue cuando se inauguró la actual autovía.
Cerca de la escultura esta la rotonda “Fallas de Elda” que da a conocer que en Elda hay Fallas ( que no Hogueras…)
