Father Flanagan was born 7/13/1886 in Ballymoe, Ireland. He died 5/15/1948 in Berlin, Germany at the age of 61. He emigrated to the US in 1904, as a young man with his sister. After a few health concerns and studying in Rome and Innsbruck, Austria he was ordained as a priest in 1912. His first parish was in O'Neill, Nebraska. His second was here in Omaha. He became a US citizen in 1919.

Father Flanagan developed an understanding for the boys and young men who were orphaned by society. He founded the orphanage and educational complex known as Boys Town.  He started his Boys Town in downtown Omaha but the facilities were inadequate and he moved 10 miles west of Omaha in 1921. At that time Boys Town was out in country and grew into a town with his direction. BoysTown grew to be a large community with a mayor, school, chapel, post office, cottages and gymnasium. Boys ages 10-16, regardless of race, creed or cultural background could attend school and learn a trade. He went to great lengths to seek out the neediest and most helpless boys - even boys who were in prison. "When you help a child today, you write the history of tomorrow."

In 1938 a movie Boys Town starring Spencer Tracy as Fr. Flanagan and Mickey Rooney as one of the boys was released. Actor Tracy won Academy Award Best Actor for the film. Other notes about Fr. Flanagan, he was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1965. His likeness is on the 4 cent stamp in 1986 of Great Americans series. Boys Town and it's mission are 100 years old and still helping boys and girls to achieve great things.

This multi shows off a few of the statues and things around the Boys Town campus. You do not need to get out the car to get the answers.
