A national flag is one of the most instantly recognizable symbols of a country’s identity. They are patriotic symbols that represent the people and values of that country through colour, shapes and form.
Regions tend to have commonalities in design like the Scandinavian cross on the national flags of Nordic counties; green, yellow and red featuring strongly on African flags; European nations have tri-color flags as they were historically easy to make and an easy way to reflect the colors of a king during battle; many Islamic nation’s flag feature a crescent; countries in the southern hemisphere use a southern cross and Commonwealth countries USED TO HAVE the Union Jack. Of 56 Commonwealth countries, only five still have flags with a quarter of it dedicated to the UK flag. No former British colony from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean or the Americas has the Union Jack on their flag any longer.
With the commonalities comes confusion. The flags of Poland, Indonesia and Monaco are the same albeit Poland is the upside down version; the flags of Chad and Romania as are those of Luxembourg and the Netherlands are effectively the same; Australia and New Zealand flags are constantly mistaken; the Irish flag is the reverse of the Côte d’Ivoire flag; Venezuela, Ecuador, and Colombia all have red, yellow and blue horizontal tricolours; the difference between the flags of Turkey and Tunisia is the distance between the crescent and star; and you are forgiven if confused which red, white and green flag belongs to Kurdistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Bulgaria or Hungary.
