Geocache Description:

**There is nothing at the posted coordinates; solve the puzzle in the comfort of home to learn the final coordinates. This is a letterbox hybrid geocache, which means the rubber stamp needs to stay in the container, its not a trade item.**

Welcome to the Abandoned mine series.

The team here at Lost Horse Mine need your help. To extract gold from the ore in the field, cyanide is used. Even just a rice grain sized amount is lethal. We cannot risk any spilling and leaching into the ground water; the measurement must be precise. We need exactly 4 units of cyanide but only have a 5 unit jug, a 3 unit beaker, and a large tank of cyanide of unknown volume. As you walk up to help the team the jug has 3 units in already and the beaker is empty. Figure how to get 4 units of cyanide in a single container and the team will give you the final coordinates along trail 004.

This is similar to the water jug problem in die hard 3. Figure the shortest correct sequence of pouring between the tank of unknown volume, the jug, and the beaker so the team can safely extract any gold. Then enter the string of letters corresponding to each pour in the sequence into the checker below and you'll be rewarded with the final coordinates.
Filling the jug from the tank is 'A'.
Dumping everything in the jug into the tank is 'B'.
Filling the beaker from the tank is 'C'.
Dumping everything in the beaker into the tank is 'D'.
Pouring everything from the jug to the beaker until full is 'E'.
Pouring everything from the beaker to the jug until full is 'F'.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.

Permission and travel

Along the north tip of the Bannock mountain range is the Wells Cargo Quartz abandoned mine. It sits at the end of Michaud Creek Rd which branches off from E County Rd. As you leave the reservation on Michaud Creek Rd heading to the parking waypoint, you'll spot a cattle grid and two large 'no tresspass' signs. Those refer to the land either side of the road, we are ok to travel on this road, but uphill of the signs the road gets a bit choppy; not bad enough you need a high clearance vehicle, but you will want to take it slow. Park at the parking coordinates and hike unless you have an off road vehicle narrower than 50". Know that trail #004 (wild Horse Mountain trail) has a couple of rocky spots that get up to 31° steep. It is 2 miles long with 1200' of ascent and sports stunning views of the Pocatello Mountain Range to the east, the Deep Creek range to the west, and beyond the open face mine to the north is the American Falls reservoir. There are no official dates when the gate at the cattle grid gate closes but it tends to match the rest of the area, open May 15th - November 15th. The best time to go is late August through end of September for cooler temperatures and fully melted snow, though you can hike these trails any time any day of the year. That said, if mud is sticking to your boots or tires, consider waiting til another day to avoid tearing up the trails. If going during winter, almost all the letterboxes are off the ground but snow drifts are big here so bring a shovel along with your snowshoes. Bring plenty of water in all seasons.

If the 'no tresspass' signs at the cattle grid on Michaud creek make you uncomfortable, you can approach from Trail Creek or Kinport Road. Both trailheads are listed among the waypoints and can support off road traffic less than 50" wide with the gates open May 15th - November 15th. Other than one exception, every geocache in the Abandoned Mine GeoArt is on Forest Service land and they are all less than 600' from the trail; some are pretty close. We have permission to be here and you will probably see other trail users. Some people do target practice along this range at unofficial spots. There is zero history here of any shooting injuries to hikers outside of lead draw (the go-to unruly shooting spot), but if you have concerns, wear orange and you shall have no issues being seen. The letterbox just outside Forest service land is also placed with permission and is functionally in the same area as trail #004, though it lies in a different land parcel. Astaris Idaho LLC owns almost all active mines around Pocatello and have no concern with us being that close to the trail geocaching; we are far from their phosphorous assets.

About Lost Horse Mine

Lost Horse Mine was originally established to find Copper and Silver. Quite unsatisfyingly very little progress was made toward mining and there is virtually no sign there is almost no sign at all that any prospecting or mining took place here. Below is a google earth shot of the area staked under the prospecting claim filed under the area mining report from 1957 by J.C. Dotson. The picture at the top of the cache page is from Last Chance Mine in Wallace Idaho in 1910. The image in the background of the puzzle is from Bunker Hill in Kellogg Idaho from 1904, a short distance west of Chance Mine. Both mines were wildly more successful than the ones around Pocatello. The background is the map of the abandoned Wells Cargo Silica open face mine at the north of this trail. There are many more mines in Pocatello but they are either active or have little known information. Most of the abandoned mines in the area were filled in or are on private land - searching for them or learning of them is tough but the Idaho Geology web map is a good start. You can find more info here.
