The S.S. Minnow is a fictional charter vessel from the 25-minute, television sitcom, “Gilligan’s Island.” The program originally aired for three seasons on CBS beginning in 1964, and featured seven people who ended up being castaways. The S.S. Minnow was captained by Capt. Jonas Grumby [The Skipper] (Alan Hale Jr.) with Willy Gilligan (Bob Denver) as the first mate. The S.S. Minnow set off for a fateful trip, a three-hour tour carrying passengers Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus), a millionaire; his wife Eunice “Lovey” Howell (Natalie Schafer); movie star Ginger Grant (Tina Louise); Professor Roy Hinkley, Ph.D. [The Professor] (Russell Johnson); and Mary Ann Summers (Dawn Wells). Unfortunately, the weather started getting rough, and the tiny ship was tossed. Thanks to the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow was not lost. Instead, it set ground on the shore of an uncharted desert isle, leaving the seven with no phone, no lights, no motor car and not a single luxury. It was like Robinson Crusoe, as primitive as can be. Despite these dire circumstances, there were no shortages of laughs and good-natured antics in the program.
