Geocache Description:

About This Cache:

This container is above your head and you will need the help of a special tool to retrieve it.  The tool is hidden at the base of the tree.  Please replace the container and tool exactly as found.

About Burgh Castle:

Burgh Castle is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in East Anglia and one of the most impressive Roman buildings to survive anywhere in Britain. During the 3rd and 4th centuries AD it was one of a chain of ‘Forts of the Saxon Shore’, built to defend the coast of south-east England.

After the Roman period, the site may have been occupied by an early Christian monastery; and after 1066 a Norman castle was built inside the Fort walls (later demolished). The site provides stunning views across the Rivers Waveney and Yare to Halvergate Marshes, part of the Broads National Park – an area rich in bird, animal and plant life.

About This Series:

This is one of three trails which have been set up around Caistor Roman Town, St Benet’s Abbey and Burgh Castle. Roman remains have been found at Caistor Roman Town and Burgh Castle, whilst Monks were known to reside at St Benet’s Abbey.  We have therefore themed the series as “Romans, Romans, Monks.”

We hope you enjoy the trails and the sites.  Please keep dogs on a lead at all times.

A significant amount of time and effort has gone into creating these caches.  Please use stealth and ensure that each cache is well covered and closed properly, when returned to its hiding place.

The caches have been placed with the kind permission and in collaboration with the Norfolk Archaeological Trust.
