🏁 The Wangaratta Gimmick Rally – GeoQuest
Welcome to Australia’s First-Ever Gimmick Rally!
(That we’re aware of!)
Popular in parts of the USA since the 1960s, Gimmick Rallies are part puzzle, part misdirection, and all fun. Now, for the first time, the Australian geocaching community gets to experience this quirky and challenging twist on the traditional car rally!
🧩 What Is a Gimmick Rally?
Think of it as a giant board game:
- The streets are the board
- Your car is the playing piece
- Your team solves riddles, follows unusual directions, and avoids being “tricked” by the Rallymasters
- Speed doesn’t matter — your score is based on how well you spot gimmicks and avoid red herrings
The aim? To outwit the Rallymasters, who’ll do their best to guide you off-course and cost you points!

🚗 This Event
- 📍 Start Location: Ryan Ave, Apex Road Safety School, Wangaratta
- 🕘 Time: Saturday 1st November at 9:00 AM
- 👥 Teams:
- Max 20 vehicles
- Each team must have 3–5 people
- Drivers cannot assist with navigation in any way
🖊 What to Bring:
- A pen
- A clipboard (recommended)
- Team spirit and a sense of humour!
✅ When logging a “Will Attend”, please include:
• Your team name
• Who will be in your vehicle
After a team briefing, vehicles will be released at short intervals. Starting order will be drawn randomly.
🎮 The Gimmicks & The Game
- All roads are 2wd suitable (mostly sealed) and within (or close to) the township of Wangaratta
- The winning team gets the FTF log
- There may be a physical prize — everyone loves Jelly Beans! 🍬
- Feel free to decorate your vehicle (within legal limits) — we might even award a prize for the best-decorated car (…that’s two bags of jelly beans now 😄)
⚠️ NOTE: This event takes place on public roads. All road rules must be obeyed. The driver is fully responsible for safe and lawful operation of their vehicle.
By participating, you agree to indemnify the event hosts and related parties from any losses, damages, or claims arising from your involvement in the event.

We’ve contacted several motels — they’ve confirmed availability, but we recommend booking early.
