Geocache Description:

Lymantria dispar dispar

The Spongy Moth or more colloquially known as the Gypsy Moth, is native to Europe.  It first arrived in the United States well over a century ago. Today it can be found throughout the Northeastern United States where it has dramatically changed the landscape. Illinois is now on the front lines of trying to limit the damage the caterpillars can do to area forests.

Early detection is critical to limit the spongy moth's spread to new areas. If left unchecked, this pest can strip leaves and even kill trees, if severe defoliation persists for multiple seasons.

Several forestry, habitat protection, and wildlife agences have placed thousands of traps to distrupt the mating cycle of this voracious creature.

To find this geocache you need to answer TRUE or FALSE to the following statement:

The female spongy moth is larger than the male.

TRUE: N 41° 13.655′ W 88° 16.713′

FALSE: N 41° 14.007' W 088° 14.607'
