Geocache Description:

This is a training Geo #2 for Cub Scout Pack 1382 Alvey. This was placed in Peytons honor.

When I was placing this cache, I noticed a tree nearby that was absolutely COVERED in these big round bumps.  Upon further inspection, I found out they were Spotted Lantern Fly eggs.  Yuck!

Spotted lanternflies (SLF) can stress and occasionally kill plants, but they don't usually kill trees. They're primarily agricultural pests that can damage grape vines, fruit trees, and hardwoods, which can reduce crop yields. However, scientists have only observed SLF killing grapevines, tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), and black walnut saplings. SLF feeding can also cause branch dieback and decline in plant health, especially in their favorite hosts like black walnut and maple.

What to do with the eggs?

  • SLF lay brownish-gray, waxy, mud-like egg masses that are about one inch long. When the eggs are older, they turn brown and scaly. You can find egg masses on trees, cement, rocks, and other hard surfaces between September and April. If you find egg masses, you can scrape them off and put them in a container or bag with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer, or you can smash them.

This cache is right on the side of the trail.  You should not have to leave the trail to find it.  Please leave things the way you found them, so the next geocacher can enjoy the find! Only a small log inside this one.  Please bring a pen or pencil to sign. No poison ivy noticed when placing.

**This cache was placed with permission from Senior Ranger Wysocki of the Prince William County Parks and Rec Service.
