Geocache Description:

Attention : earthcache potentiellement inaccessible suivant la marée !

Vérifiez les horaires de marées

Warning: earthcache potentially inaccessible depending on tide! Check tide times

For this earthcache, head to the rocky coast north of the beach known as “Fort-Bloqué,” where you will find an area of mica schist injected with granite veins. It is located in the northern part of the beach referred to on IGN maps as “Pen-er-Malo beach,” also known to the inhabitants of the Lorient region as Fort-Bloqué beach.

Clearly distinct on the geological map of the area, with the green zone and the pink zone, these rocky outcrops (mica schists + granites) are more or less visible along the beach as far as Fort Keragan, depending on the conditions of beach nourishment or erosion.

The mica schists, known as the Pouldu unit, injected with leucogranites dating back 300 million years, are located in the contact zone between the northern shear zone of the Ploemeur granite and its mica schist host rock. This series, consisting mainly of foliated minerals, at Fort du Loc'h and on the foreshore at Fort-Bloqué, also includes silver-gray mica schists, sometimes showing numerous millimeter-sized black biotite porphyroblasts.

These units are mainly marked by a later evolution, corresponding to a continental collision during the Variscan Orogeny itself about 360 Ma ago.

Ploemeur granite forms a well-defined massif that occupies the entire southern part of the sheet, from Fort-Bloqué in the west to Locmiquélic and Pointe de Gâvres in the east, passing through Ploemeur and Larmor-Plage. Three facies have been distinguished cartographically: medium/coarse-grained granite with muscovite and subordinate biotite, medium-grained granite with biotite and subordinate muscovite, and fine-grained granite with muscovite and subordinate biotite.

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery

Question 1 - Go to the coordinates of this EarthCache to answer the first question. In front of you are rock outcrops rising out of the sand. Based on the information provided in the description of this EarthCache and your location, are you looking at mica schist from the Pouldu unit or granite from Ploemeur?

Question 2 - Head to the waypoint (N 47° 44.171′ W 3° 30.186′) where you should find the rocky outcrops shown in this photo. Take a close look at areas A and B and identify the type of rock found under area A and under area B. Which of the two rocks is older?

Mandatory souvenir photo - Please post a photo of yourself or one of your favorite geocaching items (or even just your username written on a piece of paper or your hand) with the beach and Fort Bloqué in the background in your log.

Log in this "Found it" cache with your photo in your log and send me your answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com (Message Center) mail, and I will contact you in case of a problem.

To remind: there is no box to find to validate an earthcache! You can log your discovery but also send me your answers as soon as possible.
