The village of Bletchingly dates back to the medieval period or even before. The village was on a route or road to the south of the north downs and was a trade and pilgrimage route to Canterbury. To the rear right hand side of the of the memorial is a narrow street -that was the original High Street -lined with medieval timber framed buildings. From the Georgian era onwards the new coach route lined by public houses and coaching inns was formed. It is now the A25!
The War Memorial is in the centre of the village - parking is free but the village is very busy and full.of cars. Take care when parking and please when walking to the cache zone, keep children and geodogs under control.
The base /surround of the war memorial was formed in the 1930's. The original structure was erected in 1921. Read the inscriptions on the ground surrounding the memorial
