Bienvenue dans cette multi-cache ayant pour but de vous proposer une longue randonnée rejoignant les villages du vallon des chantoirs, au départ de La Reid (plus de détails plus bas). Cette multi est un tour de 36km de long, pour environ 850m de dénivelé positif et négatif. Seuls des geocacheurs en excellente condition physique peuvent donc réaliser ce parcours en une seule fois – d’où les 4 étoiles de terrain.

Le parcours alterne différents environnements entre forêts, prairies/champs, villages. Vous aurez l’occasion de voir plusieurs panoramas imposants, notamment autour de Remouchamps. Vous serez également amenés à longer partiellement plusieurs cours d’eau : la Gervova, l’Amblève (à Remouchamps) et le fond Bastin. Le seul danger à ma connaissance est que vous serez amené à certains moments à traverser une grande route : prudence !

Le geocaching étant interdit par la DNF au sein des réserves naturelles wallonnes, aucun waypoint (même virtuel) ne se trouve au sein de la Heid des Gattes. L’accès à la carrière de la Falize y est actuellement interdit à cause d’éboulements à répétitions. Il est possible de prolonger un peu le tour en suivant le chemin de la carrière du Goivreux – comptez dans ce cas +-1km et 100m de dénivelé positif et négatif en plus. Dans ce cas, pliez-vous aux règlements en vigueur dans les réserves naturelles : Respectez le calme du lieu, restez sur les sentiers, tenez vos chiens en laisse et vos enfants par la main, ne prélevez rien et ne jetez aucun détritus.

Vous pouvez vous stationner à N50°29.312 E005°47.434.Pour déterminer les coordonnées de la cache, vous devrez reconnaitre la photo correspondante (voir image) à chacun des 24 waypoints (A à X). Le parking n’est pas un waypoint : il n’y a aucune photo à y reconnaitre ! Associez le nombre de la photo appropriée à la lettre du waypoint. In fine, complétez les coordonnées suivantes : N50°30.Y E005°47.Z, où Y=1000-A-C-E-G-I-K-M-O-Q-S-U-W et Z=1000-B-D-F-H-J-L-N-P-R-T-V-X. Notez qu’il y a deux images de plus que de waypoints, donc deux photos de la matrice sont inutiles.

Je n’ai malheureusement pas trouvé de planque adéquate, et suffisamment à distance d’autres caches, sur le chemin du retour entre Becco et La Reid. Ne soyez donc pas surpris : vous devrez vous écarter un peu du tracé principal pour récupérer la cache. N'attendez d'atteindre le parking: calculez les coordonnées lorsque vous êtes au WP24.

Descriptif des points d’intérêts principaux :

• Vallon des chantoirs : Région entre Sprimont et Aywaille riche en chantoirs. Ces derniers sont des phénomènes karstiques au cours duquel l’eau, dissolvant le sol-calcaire sous-jacent, continue sa route sous le sol. En clair, le cours d’eau s’enfonce dans le sol pour poursuivre sa route. La randonnée passe à proximité de 3 chantoirs : le chantoir de Béron Ry (un peu avant Hotchamps, entre les WP14 et 15), le chantoir d’Adzeux (entre les WP18 et 19) et le chantoir de la Reid (sur le chemin du retour après le WP24). Cependant, aucun de ces trois chantoirs n’est bien visible depuis le chemin. Afin d’observer au mieux ce phénomène, je vous conseille de réaliser un léger détour entre les WP18 et 19, afin de vous rendre à la cache « [TdW] L.68 Sprimont – Chantoir de Grandchamp» de bemi62. Autre possibilité: un détour vers la cache "Singing Waters" de captaincook entre les WP15 et 16. Les différents cours d’eau s’enfonçant sous terre dans le vallon s’y rejoignent en un seul : le Rubicon. Ce dernier y creusa le sol avant de refaire surface à Remouchamps puis de se jeter dans l’Amblève. C’est donc le Rubicon que l’on peut visiter au sein des Grottes de Remouchamps.
• La Reid : La Reid (Rayi, « terre défrichée ») est une localité de Theux, bien qu’elle fût indépendante avant la fusion des communes. Durant les années 50, La Reid devint un village très riche grâce au commerce du bois, transporté via l’ancienne gare de La Reid. Vous pourrez observer l’église saint-lambert ou encore l’arbre de la liberté de la Reid, planté à l’occasion du centenaire de l’indépendance de la Belgique. En fin de marche, lors du retour vers le parking, je vous conseille d’emprunter l’Arvô de la Reid. Il s’agit d’un passage voûté, formé d’un arc en plein cintre, et ouvrant une voie publique sous une habitation.
• Sougné-Remouchamps : Sougné-Remouchamps est un village rattaché à la commune d’Aywaille et établi le long de l’Amblève. Son origine est très ancienne, en témoigne la découverte de vestiges préhistoriques. Sougné aurait d’ailleurs été le chef-lieu de la tribu gauloise des Sègnes. Les hauteurs du village ont été le témoin de la bataille de Sprimont opposant la France révolutionnaire à l’empire autrichien (1794, WP13). Remouchamps est aussi le l’emplacement d’un château fort : le château de Montjardin (1327). Au cours de la randonnée, vous pourrez contempler deux panoramas ; l’un sur le château (WP6), et l’autre sur le village et l’Amblève (un peu avant le WP8). Lors de votre passage dans le village, prêtez attention à la magnifique Eglise immaculée conception.
• La Heid des Gattes : La Heid des Gattes est une réserve naturelle ayant été crée sur le flanc droit de Remouchamps-Aywaille. Dans un premier temps crée afin de préserver le dernier morceau d’affleurement natif des carriers, elle recouvre aujourd’hui les deux carrières désaffectées de la Falize et de Goivreux. Le site très particulier (sol de grès à ciment calcaire orienté sud) permet le développement d’associations végétales rares voire uniques en Belgique (NE RIEN PRELEVER !). La Heid des Gattes tire son nom de troupeaux de chèvres sauvages, présentes sur le site, et nécessaires au maintien de la spécificité de l’écosystème.
• Hotchamps : Hotchamps est une petite localité rattachée à la commune de Sprimont. Il s’agit d’un ancien hameau agricole, en témoigne la présence d’anciennes fermes, et impliqué dans l’extraction et la forge du fer.
• Deigné : Apparenté à Aywaille, Deigné est un village lui aussi ancien puisqu’il s’agit d’une ancienne place forte Gauloise. Des tombes gallo-romaines ont d’ailleurs été découvertes et fouillées à proximité du village (WP17). Deigné signifie « terre battue » en Wallon. Le village a été (est toujours) considéré comme l’un des plus beaux de wallonie, et porte le titre de « village fleuri ».  Le monde sauvage d’Aywaille s’est installé au voisinage de Deigné. Lors de votre passage dans le village, observez la magnifique place principale, son église et sa fontaine.
• Hodbomont : Hodbomont est un village, aujourd’hui rattaché à Theux, et situé sur le versant Nord d’un ruisseau appelé le Wayot. Un magnifique château-ferme y a été construit au XVIIe siècle par le riche marchand de draps verviétois Fyon puis par les comtes portugais de Pinto. Le château, qui a aussi abrité des enfants juifs durant la 2^ème guerre mondiale, est aujourd’hui une résidence hôtelière. Lors de votre passage à Hodbomont, ne manquez pas  d’une part l’ancienne roue à aube présente à l’entrée du village (en tournant à gauche pour vous rendre au WP22). D’autre part, observez l’ancienne chapelle Sainte-Geneviève.
• Becco : Becco (« bôkholt », bois de hêtre) est une ancienne localité de La Reid, aujourd’hui rattachée à Theux. Becco est situé sur un promontoire entre les ruisseaux Turon et Targnion. Becco est caractérisé par ses habitations et petites structures agricoles du XVIIe siècle. Becco fête Saint-Eloi, le patron des orfèvres et des forgerons, le village disposant autrefois de plusieurs maréchal-ferrants et clouteries. Lors de votre passage sur la place de Becco, ne manquez pas le tilleul massif, la fontaine, ainsi que la chapelle dédiée à Saint-Eloi : une statue du Saint est présente au-dessus de la porte et reconnaissable avec son enclume !

Welcome to this multi-cache, the aim of which is to offer you a long hike to the villages of the Vallon des Chantoirs, starting from La Reid (more details below). This multi-cache is 36km long, with around 850m of ascent and descent. Only geocachers in excellent physical condition can complete this tour in one go - hence the 4-star terrain rating.

The route alternates between forests, meadows/fields and villages. You'll have the opportunity to see several imposing panoramas, notably around Remouchamps. You'll also have to walk partially alongside several watercourses: the Gervova, the Amblève (at Remouchamps) and the Fond Bastin. As far as I know, the only danger is that you will cross a main road at certain points: be careful!

As geocaching is forbidden by the DNF in Walloon nature reserves, there are no waypoints (even virtual ones) in the Heid des Gattes. Access to the Falize quarry is currently forbidden due to repeated rockfalls. It is possible to extend the tour a little by following the path to the Goivreux quarry - in this case count +-1km and 100m of positive and negative ascent in addition. In this case, please observe the rules in force in nature reserves: respect the calm of the area, stay on the paths, keep your dogs on a lead and your children by the hand, don't take anything and don't litter.

You can park at N50°29.312 E005°47.434. To determine the coordinates of the cache, you'll need to recognize the corresponding photo (see image) at each of the 24 waypoints (A to X). The parking lot is not a waypoint: there are no photos to recognize! Match the number of the appropriate photo with the letter of the waypoint. Finally, complete the following coordinates: N50°30.Y E005°47.Z, where Y=1000-A-C-E-G-I-K-M-O-Q-S-U-W and Z=1000-B-D-F-H-J-L-N-P-R-T-V-X. Note that there are two more images than waypoints, so two photos of the matrix are useless.

Unfortunately, I didn't find a suitable hiding place, far enough away from other caches, on the way back between Becco and La Reid. So don't be surprised: you'll have to deviate a little from the main route to retrieve the cache. Don't wait until you reach the parking lot: calculate the coordinates when you're at WP24.

Description of main points of interest :

-Vallon des chantoirs: A region between Sprimont and Aywaille rich in chantoirs. Chantoirs are karstic phenomena in which water, dissolving the underlying limestone soil, continues to flow beneath the ground. In other words, the watercourse sinks into the ground to continue its course. The hike passes close to 3 chantoirs: the chantoir de Béron Ry (just before Hotchamps, between WP14 and WP15), the chantoir d'Adzeux (between WP18 and WP19) and the chantoir de la Reid (on the way back after WP24). However, none of these three chantoirs is clearly visible from the road. To get the best view of this phenomenon, I suggest you make a slight detour between WP18 and 19, to get to bemi62's cache “[TdW] L.68 Sprimont - Chantoir de Grandchamp". Another possibility: a detour to captaincook's “singing waters” cache, between WP15 and 16.The various watercourses running underground in the valley merge here into one: the Rubicon. The Rubicon dug its way through the soil before resurfacing at Remouchamps and flowing into the Amblève. It is the Rubicon that can be visited in the Grottes de Remouchamps.

- La Reid: La Reid (Rayi, “cleared land”) is a locality of Theux, although it was independent before the communes merged. In the 1950s, La Reid became a very wealthy village thanks to the timber trade, transported via the old La Reid railway station. Take a look at the church of St. Lambert and the La Reid liberty tree, planted to mark the centenary of Belgian independence. At the end of the walk, on the way back to the parking lot, I recommend you take the Arvô de la Reid. This is a vaulted passageway, formed by a semicircular arch, opening onto a public thoroughfare beneath a dwelling.

- Sougné-Remouchamps: Sougné-Remouchamps is a village attached to the commune of Aywaille, along the Amblève river. Its origins go back a long way, as evidenced by the discovery of prehistoric remains. Sougné is said to have been the chief town of the Gallic Sègnes tribe. The village heights witnessed the Battle of Sprimont between revolutionary France and the Austrian Empire (1794, WP13). Remouchamps is also the site of a fortified castle: the Château de Montjardin (1327). During the hike, you'll enjoy two panoramic views: one over the castle (WP6), and the other over the village and the Amblève (just before WP8). As you pass through the village, look out for the magnificent Immaculate Conception Church.

- La Heid des Gattes: The Heid des Gattes is a nature reserve created on the right flank of Remouchamps-Aywaille. Initially created to preserve the last piece of native quarry outcrop, it now covers the two disused quarries of Falize and Goivreux. The very special site (south-facing sandstone soil with limestone cement) is home to plant associations that are rare, if not unique, in Belgium (DON'T TAKE ANYTHING!). The Heid des Gattes takes its name from the herds of wild goats present on the site, which are essential for maintaining the specificity of the ecosystem.

- Hotchamps: Hotchamps is a small village in the commune of Sprimont. It was once an agricultural hamlet, as evidenced by the presence of old farms, and was involved in iron mining and forging.

- Deigné: Related to Aywaille, Deigné is also an ancient village, being an ancient Gaulish stronghold. Gallo-Roman tombs have been discovered and excavated near the village (WP17). Deigné means “beaten earth” in Walloon. The village was (and still is) considered one of the most beautiful in Wallonia, and has been awarded the title of “Village Fleuri”.  The wild world of Aywaille has settled in the vicinity of Deigné. As you pass through the village, take a look at the magnificent main square, its church and fountain.

- Hodbomont: Hodbomont is a village, now part of Theux, on the northern slopes of a stream called the Wayot. A magnificent farm castle was built here in the 17th century by the wealthy Verviers cloth merchant Fyon, and later by the Portuguese Counts of Pinto. The castle, which also sheltered Jewish children during WW2, is now a hotel residence. As you pass through Hodbomont, don't miss the old paddle wheel at the entrance to the village (turn left to get to WP22). And don't miss the old Sainte-Geneviève chapel.

- Becco: Becco (“bôkholt”, beech wood) is an old village in La Reid, now part of Theux. Becco lies on a promontory between the Turon and Targnion streams. Becco is characterized by its 17th-century dwellings and small farming structures. Becco celebrates Saint-Eloi, the patron saint of goldsmiths and blacksmiths, as the village once boasted a number of blacksmiths and clouteries. As you pass through the Becco square, don't miss the massive lime tree, the fountain and the chapel dedicated to Saint-Eloi: there's a statue of the Saint above the door, recognizable by its anvil!
