Geocache Description:

A primeira 'church micro' / micro igreja do Brasil!

Brazil's very first church micro!

The Cathedral of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, is a Catholic cathedral located in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was inaugurated in 1979, replacing the Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo as the city's cathedral. In a modern style, it has a conical shape, with a diameter of 106 meters, an external height of 75 meters, an internal height of 64 meters, and a capacity for 20,000 people standing. A distinctive feature of the building, with its straight and sober lines, is the colored stained glass windows that run along the walls up to the dome. Its design and construction were coordinated by Monsignor Ivo Antônio Calliari (1918 - 2005).

The project was designed by architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca: according to some, it was inspired by the ships of the Apollo Project, as a symbol of the future; according to others, it was inspired by the Mayan pyramids. The main door is made up of bronze reliefs and has faith as its theme. The interior of the cathedral was designed by Father Paulo Lachen Maier. The sculptures are by Humberto Cozzo. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament has two chandeliers by Niccola Zanotto.
