Right across the street from where the cache is hidden is a little mall called Holtagarðar that has seen better days. In the 80s and 90s it was a prestigious mall in Iceland, with one of the first Ikea stores located there.
Before the financial crisis in Iceland there was a lot of money flowing into the country and in 2008 the mall was reopened after being renewed and doubled in size. A few months later the financial crisis of 2008 hit Iceland hard. Nowadays, the mall is just a half-empty mall with small businesses and stores that frequently go out of business, outlets, one discount supermarket and a gym.
West of Holtagarðar, surrounded by trees, is the oldest mental institution in Iceland, Kleppur. It was founded in 1907. Today Kleppur is a part of Iceland's national hospital (Landspítali), and mostly houses rehabilitation programs and specialized mental health teams, with many people getting mental health treatment and rehabilitation there.
